The spillways are particularly crucial during Pakistan’s monsoon season, which typically runs from June to August. During this time, the Indus River experiences significantly increased water flow due to rainfall and melting glaciers. By regulating water levels in the reservoir, the spillways prevent overtopping and mitigate the risk of flooding in nearby regions.

Maintenance and Challenges

Given the immense volume of water they handle, the spillways require regular maintenance to remain operational. Issues such as cavitation and surface erosion can occur over time, necessitating repairs to maintain their efficiency and safety.

To enhance the dam’s capabilities, Pakistan has undertaken several projects to extend the dam’s operational life and improve its infrastructure. One notable initiative is the Tarbela Dam Fourth Extension Hydropower Project, which aims to increase power generation and optimize water management. The spillways remain a central component of these developments, highlighting their importance in the overall functionality of the dam.
